Produced in 2011 in collaboration with the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, this portrait was unveiled at the Sydney Opera House to celebrate Ashkenazy’s tenure as Principal Conductor. The portrait is set in Sydney’s most iconic building and highlights the musicality of the architecture as well as the dynamism and passion of the Maestro himself. Under Ashkenazy’s direction, the orchestra achieved recognition on the world stage and, thanks to the generosity of Michael and Shanny Crouch, the portrait now forms part of the collection on the National Portrait Gallery in honour of his contribution to the cultural life of Australia.
