Shakespeare Revisited: Globe Theatre
To commemorate the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 2016, Random House decided to commission a group of authors to produce a novel inspired by a Shakespearean play of their choice. In collaboration with the publishers, the artist produced a series of portraits, which were first displayed at the Hogarth Shakespeare book launch at the British Library in 2015 and then as part of the inauguration of the Shakespeare400 festival at Kings College London in 2016.
The portraits included authors Margaret Atwood, Gillian Flynn, Jo Nesbo, Tracy Chevalier, Anne Tyler and Howard Jacobson, with each portrait drawing inspiration from the writers’ oeurvre as well as the Shakespearean plays they chose to retell. Later that year they were exhibited in Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre, as part of their celebrations for Shakespeare400.
